…The contrasting resumés meant very little in race two at Edmonton when Van Winkle stunned the field to become the youngest winner in Pro Sport Bike history, carving his way to the front in only his second appearance in the middleweight category.
The 17-year-old sport bike racer earned himself another spot in the history books becoming the youngest ever race winner in the Canadian Superbike Championship with his victory at the R.A.D. Torque Raceway in Edmonton, AB, last weekend (June 21-23).
The Chilliwack product made his debut in the Sport Bike class in what was the third round of this year’s Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship. Having made the step-up from the Pro-Twins class, the young rider was seen as an underdog heading into the weekend.

Less than two years after being the youngest person to receive a racing license from the Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club, Chilliwack’s Andrew (AJ) Van Winkle, now 15, has been given another honour. The teenager will race in the newly-established pro twins class of the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship.
Chilliwack teenager Andrew (AJ) Van Winkle headed down to Florida recently for his spring break, but not for the typical getaway undertaken by vacationing teenagers and their families.
Instead, the motorcycle racing prodigy fulfilled a mission by working with professionals from Bridgestone to test out their bikes and improve his ride.
All this before being old enough to acquire a B.C. driver’s license, too.
Andrew Van Winkle is an exceptional talent. This 14-year-old motorcycling racer is the first rider of his age to be issued a motorcycling racing license in his hometown of Chilliwack, B.C. Typically, riders must wait until they are 16 to get their license, but due to his ability, track maturity and his experience—he’s been racing dirt bikes since he was five, and small motorcycles against adults since he was 10—the Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club (WMRC) offered him the opportunity.
Chilliwack’s A.J. Van Winkle is the youngest to ever get a racing licence from Mission’s Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club (WMRC).
The teenager just turned 14, and historically licenses don’t go to anyone younger than 16. While the club says lowering the age by two years isn’t specifically about Van Winkle and is their attempt to attract more young racers to the sport, the timing seems awfully coincidental.
A 14-year-old from Chilliwack is on the fast track to motorsports success.
The Pacific Coast Mini Road-Racing Club (PCMRC) held its opening races the weekend of June 19-20.
Rising star Andrew Van Winkle reached the podium five times in six races, including a pair of second place finishes in the Formula Thunder division. Competing against, and often defeating adults, the teenager has quickly made a name for himself at Chilliwack’s Greg Moore Raceway.
